AI more beneficial to cyber defenders, officials say

Cybersecurity defenders were noted by federal officials to continue having the upper hand in leveraging artificial intelligence tools over threat actors, according to CyberScoop.

Despite its reported utility in enabling automated creation of malicious code, generative AI has allowed increased efficiencies in identifying and responding to malicious network activity, as well as curbing security threats in software development, said FBI Cyber Division Deputy Assistant Director Cynthia Kaiser, who added that the agency is also working to maintain the advantages of AI for network defenders as more threat groups improve the concealment of their operations.

Generative AI has also been better utilized by cybersecurity experts so far even though uncertainties regarding the technology's net benefit remain, noted Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary for Strategy, Policy, and Plans Rob Silvers. "At this moment in time, I have seen deployed in the wild more defensive promising uses for AI than I have offensive actual uses," said Silvers.
