Two recently released reports by security firm Risk Based Security point to new records being set in the number of reported data breaches, in addition to published vulnerabilities in the first quarter of this year.
Thus far, there have been a total of 1,254 publicly reported data breaches worldwide, resulting in 3.4 billion records containing sensitive information being exposed. Between two of the breaches in the first quarter – one involving River City Media and another impacting Chinese ISP NetEase – a total of 2.5 billion records were compromised, according to a report by Dark Reading.
In its vulnerability report, the company found a 30 percent increase in the number of vulnerabilities reported when compared to the same timeframe last year.
The numbers suggest that 2017 may once again provide record setting numbers in the two areas at year’s end.
