NATO official reports 60 percent spike in cyberattacks

Cyberattacks on the NATO alliance's computer network skyrocketed by 60 percent over the last year with the majority of attacks coming from state institutions, according to a diplomat

In the first half of December alone, the alliance infrastructure was attacked 500 times, NATO's Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the German newspaper Die Welt last month in comments posted Thursday, according to Newsweek.

“They [attacks] can harm NATO's defense capability and obstruct the work of our armed forces,” Stoltenberg told the German publication.

He said the attacks could impact NATO medical and energy supplies, as well as disrupt military data exchanges which could trigger a joint response from every NATO member in the case of a large-scale cyberattack.
