IE 7 to be pushed as a security patch

Microsoft will push Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7) for Windows XP as a high priority security patch through Automatic Updates later this year.

The company announced last week that the security enhancements in the new browser version warranted the move.

"Internet Explorer 7 contains significant security enhancements that qualify it for delivery over Automatic Updates, and Microsoft recommends that all genuine Windows customers install it," a company spokesperson said in a statement last week.

Unlike many Automatic Updates, the company will give users the choice not to install IE 7. It is also making available a free tool for enterprises to use that can block users from seeing the IE 7 options and preventing Automatic Updates from installing the browser.
