Help SC honor Women and Diversity in Cybersecurity with your recommendations

More women may be working in the cybersecurity industry nowadays, but full equality in this space and other sectors is a long way off.

That’s why we at SC Media have been celebrating thought-leading female professionals and the need to elevate overall diversity in the cybersecurity industry in our special annual coverage and hardcopy edition for seven years. To ensure we consider all the women who are continuing to support this progress through their wider achievements and contributions to the cybersecurity space, we’re calling on you once again for help in 2020.

Kicking off our annual search, we’re specifically seeking out those who made notable contributions to the cybersecurity community over the past year -- those luminaries who have improved security, helped to shape the industry, provided thought leadership or made a positive impact on the advancement of cybersecurity in the government or private sectors. Whether they’re power players, influencers, policymakers or even newcomers who bear watching, SC would like to consider honoring them in our upcoming coverage and special edition.

Fortunately, too, this task of showcasing the cybersecurity industry’s leading female professionals who are making a difference has become less challenging for us year over year as more women are working in cybersecurity. Recent estimates show that about 20 percent of the workforce is female, which is up from an estimated 11 percent just a few years ago, according to Cybersecurity Ventures. This is because a majority of cybersecurity executives understand that encouraging more women – and diversity in the workplace, generally – is simply the right thing to do both from a corporate and moral standpoint.

“Equality is not a gender issue, it’s a business issue. For us it brings together different points of view stemming from our collective diversity that evolves and transforms our business delivering improved innovation to our customers and partners,” says Cindy Provin, GM, nCipher Security.

Beyond this, varying viewpoints and experiences frequently strengthen corporate aims and bottom lines by catering to an ever-growing diverse customer and client base.

“Living in a world where we are able to leverage everyone’s different backgrounds and talents in an equal way is how we can unleash what we can truly do as a society, as it allows us to solve problems in new and creative ways,” says Anying Li, senior data scientist, Exabeam. “The data is pretty clear that diversity is not a buzzword; it creates monetary value. The question then becomes how do we encourage diversity, specifically in the technology industry where such a gender gap still exists.”

To help us in our yearly efforts to continue to recognize leaders in our industry whose efforts are further closing that gap, please submit recommendations – including name, title, company, some details about career trajectory and a few sentences about what makes the nominee stand out and why she should be considered for SC’s annual Women In Security edition and online coverage – to Executive Editor Teri Robinson or [email protected], Online Editor Doug Olenick at [email protected] by April 21.
