DDoS attack disrupts Irish National Lottery

The Irish National Lottery website and ticket machines operations have been disrupted by a cyber-attack.

The Lottery issued a statement saying, “Indications are that this morning's technical issues were as a result of a DDoS attack affecting our communications networks.”

Within two hours, the issues were resolved and all operations restored, it said, adding that the National Lottery gaming system and player data were not affected at any point.

The National Lottery advised lottery ticket sellers through the RGDATA, the representative association for the independent retail grocery sector, of the problem when they discovered the issue yesterday morning.

Dave Larson, chief operating officer of Corero Network Security, commented: “The growing dependence on the internet makes the impact of successful DDoS attacks  – financial and otherwise – increasingly damaging. The gaming, and gambling sectors would appear to be higher risk targets, due to the nature of the business.”

According to the Irish National Lottery, the incident is still under investigation.
