Criminal services for sale on the dark web grow

Share

The dark web is beginning to emulate the traditional web in new and frightening ways, a Damballa blog post said.

In the same way a person can order almost any legal product imaginable on the web, the same thing now holds true for someone looking to make a more nefarious purchase on the dark web.

“Just like legitimate web commerce, the dark side of the web has become a place where you can find nearly anything, no matter how much of a niche. Thieves are taking entrepreneurial pursuits to new levels by offering cybercrime-as-a-service,” the said Loucif Kharouni, senior threat researcher at Damballa.

Some of the dark services found for sale by Damballa were: certification services, account hacking, international phone flood service and stolen accounts found on the Darknet.

And much like ecommerce on the legitimate web, selling criminal services on the Dark Web will not stop.

“There is nothing we can do to prevent someone from using the Darknet for bad intent. It's here to stay and so too are cybercriminals,” Kharouni told SCMagazine.com in an email Tuesday. “They can pay for a bulletproof provider to host their online shop or command and control server or use the Darknet, which costs less and reduces the risk of being taken down.”
