Why nominated: For his dedication to privacy issues. The OTA, of which Spiezle founded in 2004, has played a key role in developing best practices that help maximize consumer trust and protection online. Previously, he held the position of Director of Security and Privacy Product Management at Microsoft.

Profile: Spiezle's middle name may not be Privacy, but it may well should be when one looks back on the year's he has devoted to ensuring that consumers, corporations and organizations have the tools and legislation in place to maintain their privacy.

Beginning with his stint as director of security & privacy product management through his founding of the Online Trust Alliance (OTA), Spiezle has put his heart and soul into protecting people's privacy. Under his tutelage the OTA helped develop guidelines and industry technical standards, fight spam and malvertising, and advance Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), email authentication, native advertising and IoT security and privacy best practices.

Some of the initiatives Spiezle has spearheaded include:

  • Publishing the Cyber Incident & Breach Readiness Guide.
  • Developing the IoT Trust Framework.
  • Driving adoption of Sender Policy Framework (SPF), DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) and Domain Message Authentication Reporting & Conformance (DMARC).        

These helped land him several prestigious speaking roles, including testifying before Congress on IoT security and privacy dangers and discussing with the White House staff drone security, privacy cybersecurity policy, data sharing, facial recognition.

Since Spiezle's nomination for this award, he has moved on from his role as the OTA's executive director and president to take on the position of Managing Partner at AgeLight; Digital Strategic Insights. However, he retains the title of Chairman Emeritus & Founder of the OTA.
