Organizations are increasingly prioritizing the modernization of their public key infrastructure to mitigate security risks associated with the rise of quantum computing, following insights from Silicon Angle.
Public key infrastructure, or PKI, serves as the framework for managing digital certificates that secure network trust. As quantum computing capabilities evolve, experts warn that existing cryptographic standards will become vulnerable. During the World Quantum Readiness Day 2026 event, industry leaders emphasized that migration to quantum-safe algorithms is a critical, time-sensitive task. DigiCert Inc.
Chief Executive Officer Amit Sinha noted that organizations must adopt crypto agility to meet upcoming 2029 security deadlines. Research indicates that while 87% of organizations are planning for this transition, only 7% have fully deployed quantum-safe solutions. Implementation requires a staged approach, as attempting to replace all cryptographic assets simultaneously is often unmanageable. Practical testing is essential, as post-quantum cryptography can increase message sizes and impact network performance.
Furthermore, success depends on coordination across global standards, software vendors, and certificate authorities. Microsoft Corp. is currently piloting programs to ensure interoperability, highlighting that security success requires the entire digital chain to function together. Experts suggest that while the transition is complex, the fundamental steps for mitigation are well-understood by security professionals.
