WhatsApp warns of spyware in fake iPhone app

Per TechCrunch, WhatsApp has alerted approximately 200 users, primarily in Italy, who were deceived into downloading a malicious, unofficial version of its iPhone application containing spyware. The company identified the threat and is taking steps to protect its users.

WhatsApp accused Italian spyware firm SIO of creating the fake app. The spyware, previously identified as Spyrtacus, was embedded within the unofficial client. WhatsApp has logged affected users out, informed them of the risks, and urged them to remove the fake app and install the official version. The company also intends to issue a formal legal demand to SIO to cease such activities.

This incident follows a similar campaign last year where WhatsApp notified about 90 users targeted by spyware from Paragon Solutions.
