US cybersecurity strategy comes into focus

More intensive adversarial targeting and tighter industry collaboration are two of the six pillars of activity in the upcoming U.S. cybersecurity strategy, the completed draft of which is already being scrutinized by federal agencies, reports CyberScoop.

Increasingly aggressive cyberattacks driven by artificial intelligence have necessitated focusing on imposing costs and consequences to state-backed threat operations and ransomware gangs, said National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross at this year's Aspen Cyber Summit. The U.S. will also be strengthening its partnership with industry through greater support for innovative startups and the rationalization of cyber regulations, according to Cairncross, who also regarded federal government modernization and cyber workforce enhancements to be key priorities.

FBI Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Brett Leatherman, who was also at the conference, emphasized the importance of an interagency effort in advancing the federal cyber strategy. Such a strategy's focus on action lines and deliverables has been lauded by former Acting National Cyber Director Kemba Walden.
