Employees who once thought the breach at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) didn't affect them now have new reason to worry.
All of UPMC's 62,000 workers might have had their Social Security numbers, addresses, salaries and bank account information exposed, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. An internal email last week advised all staff to “take the proper precaution to protect their personal information.”
The number of affected employees has gradually increased since news of the breach broke in February. An initial quote put the number of impacted employees at 300. It was then raised to 27,000 in April.
So far, 817 people are confirmed as tax fraud victims. Multiple federal agencies and the local police are continuing to investigate the breach.
