Ukrainian extradited to US for alleged role in Conti ransomware attack

According to Security Affairs, Ukrainian national Oleksii Lytvynenko, who was extradited from Ireland to the US, faces charges for his alleged involvement in deploying Conti ransomware attacks after fleeing Ukraine in 2022.

Lytvynenko, 43, was charged with deploying Conti ransomware that extorted over $500,000 from US victims. Court documents reveal that he allegedly conspired with others to hack into victims' computer networks, encrypt their data, and demand ransom to restore access and prevent the disclosure of hacked information. The extradition highlights global cooperation in combating cybercrime, with the FBI emphasizing the significant threat ransomware poses to individuals and businesses.

If convicted, Lytvynenko could face up to 25 years in prison for computer and wire fraud conspiracy. The ongoing investigations and prosecutions by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and DOJ demonstrate the collaborative efforts to hold ransomware actors accountable and protect against further cyber threats.
