Twitter suspends 235,000 terrorist linked accounts in six months

In the last six months, Twitter has shut down 235,000 accounts linked to violent extremism bringing the overall number of suspensions to 360,000 accounts since the middle of 2015.

The social media giant listed these stats in a Thursday statement detailing the firm's most recent efforts to combat the promotion of terrorism on its platform.

Using proprietary spam-fighting tools, partnerships with organizations that help counter violent extremism, collaboration with other social media platforms, and work with law enforcement, Twitter said that it has driven meaningful results to shift this type of malicious activity off of its platform.

“Daily suspensions are up over 80 percent since last year, with spikes in suspensions immediately following terrorist attacks,” Twitter said in the statement.

In addition, the amount of time the malicious accounts are on Twitter and the number of followers these accounts accumulate has also decreased.
