After recordings exposing government corruption spread via social media, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan banned Twitter in the country.
Soon after midnight on Thursday, users in Turkey were blocked from accessing the service.
On Thursday, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News quoted Erdogan, who seemed unconcerned about potential protests stemming from a ban. His comments were made earlier that day before the social networking platform became inaccessible.
“We'll eradicate Twitter,” Erdogan reportedly said at a campaign rally in Bursa. “I don't care what the international community says. Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic.”
