TeleMessage services suspended after hacking incident

NBC News reports that TeleMessage, a Smarsh-developed app touting Signal messaging service-like encryption used by former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and other Trump administration officials, had all of its services suspended following a purported hacking incident.

After breaching TeleMessage's centralized server, the hacker claimed having been able to exfiltrate a massive file cache, which included a contact list of employees at cryptocurrency firm Coinbase. Coinbase has already confirmed the legitimacy of the list but emphasized that none of its systems and customers data have been compromised. Such assertions, which came from a hacker different from the one initially reported by independent tech news outlet 404 Media on Monday, have prompted the Customs and Border Protection to halt usage of TeleMessage. "Following the detection of a cyber incident, CBP immediately disabled TeleMessage as a precautionary measure. The investigation into the scope of the breach is ongoing," said a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson.
