Sysadmin AI adoption lags behind 2024 predictions

AI and automation have not been as transformative for IT and security workflows as system administrators predicted two years ago, according to Action1. The endpoint management specialist polled over 1,000 sysadmins globally for its report, which provides insight into how sysadmins thought AI would transform their work in 2024 versus the reality today. By 2026, adoption is much lower than they predicted across nearly every category, based on information published by Infosecurity Magazine.

The Action1 2026 Survey Report highlights significant gaps between 2024 predictions and 2026 reality for AI adoption in IT workflows. Areas like patch management optimization, server monitoring, vulnerability prioritization, and incident remediation saw predicted automation rates of over 65%, but current implementation is below 20%. Log analysis had the highest prediction at 83% automation, with 50% currently implemented.

Despite these lower-than-expected figures, AI adoption is growing selectively. Gene Moody, field CTO at Action1, suggests sysadmins are becoming more discerning, using AI for analysis and recommendations while retaining control over critical decisions. The share of organizations requiring AI use has more than doubled since 2023, and over half of sysadmins now understand AI integration, though concerns about privacy, accuracy, cost, and job replacement persist.
