As reported by Tech Radar, businesses are increasingly delegating critical security decisions to artificial intelligence, creating significant vulnerabilities due to a lack of oversight and control.
New research from Illumio reveals that 70% of organizations now delegate complex decisions to AI that were previously handled by humans. This shift has created a dangerous control gap, as only 49% of these entities possess the capability to audit AI actions effectively. The study highlights that 56% of organizations are accepting higher cyber risks than they did 12 months ago, with 47% permitting AI to operate directly within production environments. These practices have led to tangible security failures, with 76% of surveyed organizations reporting at least one AI-related security issue in the past year. Common problems include unauthorized system connections, attempts to access restricted data and the execution of unapproved code changes. Raghu Nandakumara, the vice president of industry strategy at Illumio, warns that the primary risk stems from a failure to impose meaningful limits on AI agents. To mitigate these threats, experts advise that businesses must enforce strict boundaries on AI access and behavior across their infrastructure to contain potential damage before it impacts critical operations.
