Suspicious cyber activity in FBI networks confirmed

The FBI has disclosed discovering and remediating a suspicious cybersecurity incident against its networks, reports CyberScoop.

All technical capabilities have been exhausted by the agency to deal with the intrusion, according to the FBI, which has not provided additional information on the nature or extent of the attack. However, the attack was reported by CNN and CBS to have involved the targeting of the digital surveillance system used by the agency to manage foreign intelligence surveillance warrants, pen registers, and wiretapping tools. While Chinese state-backed threat operation Salt Typhoon was previously reported to have breached the U.S. wiretapping system, its role in the recent FBI attack remains unclear.

Such a development comes as FBI Assistant Director for Cybersecurity Brett Leatherman emphasized the robustness of the agency's cyber incident response capabilities amid increasing concerns stemming from a slew of budget and workforce cuts under the second Trump administration.
