State officials urge Congress to reauthorize cybersecurity grant program

State technology officials have requested that Congress reauthorize funding for the expired State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program and renew cybersecurity programs within the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). These officials testified before a House Homeland Security subcommittee, highlighting the critical need for federal support to address escalating cyber threats, as reported by Statescoop.

State officials emphasized that the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program (SLCGP) provided essential aid to local governments, many of which lack dedicated cybersecurity staff and resources. Tennessee, for example, secured nearly 90,000 endpoints on local government networks through the program. Officials also pointed to the benefits of "whole of state" models, where states offer cybersecurity services to local entities, creating economies of scale and improving access to enterprise-grade solutions. The hearing also addressed the decommissioning of CISA programs under the Trump administration, which representatives argued has left states and local governments more vulnerable.

Lawmakers expressed varying degrees of support, with some advocating for reauthorization and optimization of the grant program, while others raised concerns about the scope of the challenge and the need for definitive solutions. The discussion also touched upon the increasing role of AI in cyberattacks and defenses, with officials suggesting that federal grants could help states keep pace with these advancements and foster collaboration between government levels and the private sector to develop AI-driven defense strategies.
