Bleeping Computer disclosed that South Korea's Financial Services Commission (FSC) convened an emergency meeting following a series of cyberattacks that have impacted several financial institutions within the country. The meeting confirmed a data breach at Shinhan Bank and acknowledged other cybersecurity incidents affecting banks such as Kookmin Bank and Hana Bank.
The attacks compromised sensitive customer data, with Shinhan Bank leaking details of 25,000 customers and Kookmin Bank exposing credit card information of 119,000 clients. Hana Bank also experienced a breach through its sales-support system. Authorities have launched on-site investigations and are collaborating with agencies like KISA. Financial companies are instructed to inspect external IT systems, enhance authentication and access controls, and expedite threat information sharing. While no perpetrators have been officially identified, reports suggest the use of ARTEX AI, an open-source penetration-testing system, and some analysts believe AI-based attack automation tools were involved. The FSC is overseeing consumer protection and analyzing the incidents for regulatory improvements, while President Lee has ordered a thorough investigation into personal data leaks.
