Sony fined in U.K. for PlayStation breach

The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office has fined Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for the 2011 breach that exposed the personal information of tens of millions of Sony PlayStation Network customers. According to a news release, Sony will pay a £250,000 ($394,784) penalty after an investigation revealed that the attack could have been prevented if company's software was fully patched. No penalties have been enforced against the company in the United States. In October, a judge dismissed several charges lodged against the electronics giant in a class-action suit. Soon after the breach, Sony estimated the incident would cost it at least $171 million.
