As noted by Infosecurity Magazine, a significant maturity gap persists in cloud security despite widespread adoption of production workloads across the industry.
A recent SANS Institute report, which surveyed 400 professionals, reveals that while 93% of organizations operate production workloads in the cloud, only 40% consider their security strategies advanced. Misconfiguration remains the primary driver of critical incidents, accounting for 45% of cases, which is more than double the rate of credential theft. Furthermore, 49% of organizations require over 24 hours to remediate these critical gaps. Serge Borso, a principal instructor at SANS, noted that the persistence of these vulnerabilities stems from fragmented management rather than sophisticated attacker tactics. Although 70% of organizations have increased their security budgets, many struggle with tool sprawl, as only 21% utilize a consolidated Cloud-Native Application Protection Platform. To address these challenges, experts recommend automating policy checks within infrastructure-as-code pipelines, consolidating security tools to reduce complexity and extending zero trust principles beyond initial authentication. These steps are essential for organizations attempting to bridge the gap between rapid cloud migration and effective, long-term security governance.
