Russia intensifies communication crackdown, targets WhatsApp

Russia is escalating its efforts to control communication platforms by attempting to block WhatsApp within the country. This move follows previous restrictions and marks a significant step in the government's ongoing campaign against services operating outside its direct oversight, based on information published by Bleeping Computer.

The Russian internet watchdog, Roskomnadzor, has reportedly excluded WhatsApp domains from the National Domain Name System, making the service accessible primarily through VPNs. This follows earlier actions, including throttling voice and video calls in August 2025 and attempting to block new user registrations in October 2025. WhatsApp's parent company, Meta, has been designated as an "extremist" entity in Russia since 2022. These actions against WhatsApp occur shortly after similar throttling measures were applied to Telegram, with Russian authorities stating that Meta must comply with local legislation for WhatsApp to resume full operations.

The intensified crackdown on communication apps like WhatsApp and Telegram raises significant concerns about freedom of expression and access to information in Russia. The promotion of the government-controlled MAX messenger app, despite privacy concerns, suggests a broader strategy to consolidate digital control.
