Resecurity denies ShinyHunters breach, claims hackers fell for honeypot

Honeypot

Cybersecurity firm Resecurity has refuted claims by the hacking group ShinyHunters that they breached the company's internal systems and stole sensitive data. Resecurity stated that the alleged breach involved attackers interacting with a honeypot, a decoy system designed to trap and monitor malicious actors, rather than their actual infrastructure, as reported by HackRead.

ShinyHunters announced on January 3 that they had gained full access to Resecurity's internal systems, claiming to have exfiltrated employee records, chat logs, and client data. They shared screenshots as evidence, alleging the attack was retaliation for Resecurity's attempts to social engineer them. However, Resecurity countered by referencing a December 24, 2025 blog post about cyber deception and honeypots. They asserted that the attackers interacted with a simulated environment containing synthetic data, fake accounts, and isolated infrastructure. Resecurity provided logs and screenshots as evidence of the attackers' activity within this controlled trap, stating no real client data or operational systems were compromised.

This incident highlights the increasing use of sophisticated tactics by cybersecurity firms to identify and study threat actors. While ShinyHunters presented the event as a significant breach, Resecurity's response suggests their honeypot strategy was successful in misleading the group and gathering intelligence on their methods.
