Report: Most hacking groups originate from China

China had the most threat operations launching cyberattacks around the world last year, at 210, almost twice as many as Russia and four times as many as Iran, with the three countries contributing to 45% of all hacking groups worldwide, according to Cybernews.

Organizations in the government, financial services, and telecommunications sectors have been subjected to most cyber intrusions last year, a report from Forescout's Vedere Labs revealed. Analysis of the report by the Chosun Biz noted China's escalated pre-positioning cyberattacks against South Korea and Taiwan. China-linked hackers have been suspected of conducting the almost three-year-long compromise of South Korea's government workflow management platform Onnara System, which resulted in the theft of civil servants' Government Public Key Infrastructure certificates and credentials. Taiwan has also been noted by the country's National Security Bureau to have experienced 2.63 million daily attacks on average last year, which is 6% higher than in 2024.

"State-on-state cyberattacks have already become a major means of modern warfare," said Park Chun-sik of Ajou University's Department of Cybersecurity.
