Quest Diagnostics identified unauthorized access to its Quanum Lab Services Manager system, marking the latest cybersecurity incident to affect a major medical technology company, with further coverage provided by MedTech Dive.
The company disclosed the breach in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, noting that the unauthorized party accessed certain patient records. While the full scope remains under investigation, Quest confirmed that patient health information and identifiable data were involved. Upon discovering the intrusion on Wednesday, the firm suspended access to the system, which clients use to place test orders and retrieve results.
Despite the breach, the company stated that core business operations remain functional and patient care has not been materially disrupted. Quest has engaged external cybersecurity experts and notified federal law enforcement to assist in the response. This incident follows a series of cyberattacks targeting the medical device industry throughout the year, including companies such as Stryker, Boston Scientific, and Medtronic. As these threats persist, industry leaders like AdvaMed Chairman Mick Farrell are working to establish new standards for cybersecurity, privacy, and interoperability to better protect sensitive data across the healthcare sector.
