Once crippled Kansas court system slowly emerges post cyberattack

Officials at Kansas' judicial branch have disclosed that operations at its courts' case management systems across all its counties will return online by the end of the week, two months following outages caused by an advanced foreign cyberattack, The Associated Press reports. While court systems enabling online marriage license applications and requests for abuse and human trafficking protections have already been restored, the judicial system is still working on resuming online operations of systems allowing public document access. Kansas would then proceed with restoring its Court of Appeals' and Supreme Court's electronic filing and case management systems afterward. "Restoring our district court case management system is a much-anticipated milestone in our recovery plan, but we still have a lot of work to do," said judicial branch spokesperson Lisa Taylor. Audits prior to the attack revealed security issues across Kansas state agencies, which were found to have a lack of awareness on prioritizing IT security responsibilities.
