A suspicious email that purports to be from AOL Mail and asks the recipient to enter credentials to “re-validate” their mailbox is a take on a classic phishing scam, according to a Monday Hoax-Slayer.com post.
The message in the body of the email states, “Your mailbox has exceeded the storage limit is 1GB, which is defined by the administrator, are running at 99.8 gigabytes, you can not send or receive new messages until you re-validate your mailbox.”
The email asks recipients to “Click Here” to renew the mailbox, and doing so pulls up a website designed to look like an authentic AOL login page, according to the post.
Entering credentials may present a message that email service was successfully restored, but the scammers likely stole the account details instead, the post indicates.
