Over 47K compromised in New York labor union breach

The Civil Service Employees Association, a major labor union for state and local government workers in New York, had information from more than 47,000 members stolen following a May data breach, Cybernews reports.

Attackers who infiltrated CSEA's systems between May 3 and May 31 may have pilfered individuals' names, Social Security numbers, and other personal details, said CSEA in a breach notice filed with the Office of the Maine Attorney General. Impacted systems were taken down, passwords were replaced, and advanced security systems were installed immediately after the discovery of the compromise.

"We worked with leading cybersecurity and privacy firms to aid in our investigation and response, and after determining unauthorized activity occurred on our systems, we immediately began analyzing the information involved to confirm the identities of potentially affected individuals to notify them," CSEA noted.

While there has been no evidence indicating misuse of the compromised data, impacted individuals have been urged to be vigilant of possible identity theft and fraud attacks.
