Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Mark Meador has pushed the adoption of online age verification to better protect children from online security threats, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.Online age verification, which has already been enacted across at least 25 states, is necessary in combating increasingly prevalent self-harm and suicide incidents among adolescents, noted Meador in a speech at an FTC-hosted age verification workshop, where he also highlighted the use of AI and other emerging technologies in curtailing inappropriate content."Behavioral age verification... strikes me as one of the best use cases for artificial intelligence. Machine learning can help detect patterns in browsing and usage behavior that consistently indicate whether a user is too young to be on the platform," said Meador.Widespread monetization of children's data has also been slammed by Meador. Such statements come as the FTC intensified its clampdown on firms that have illegally obtained children's data.
