One billion Chinese citizens’ data claimed to have been stolen

Reuters reports that one billion Chinese citizens had their personal information allegedly stolen from Shanghai police by a hacker dubbed "ChinaDan," which could be one of the largest data breaches ever if true. ChinaDan has been found selling more than 23 TB of stolen data for 10 bitcoin, or nearly $200,000, on Breach Forums last week. "In 2022, the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database was leaked. This database contains many TB of data and information on Billions of Chinese citizen. Databases contain information on 1 Billion Chinese national residents and several billion case records, including: name, address, birthplace, national ID number, mobile number, all crime/case details," said ChinaDan in the post, whose veracity has not yet been confirmed. Trivium China Head of Tech Policy Research Kendra Schaefer noted that the incident "would be among the biggest and worst breaches in history," if confirmed. Meanwhile, Binance CEO Zhao Changpeng emphasized d the cryyptocurrency's move to strengthen user verification processes following the identified sale of individual records.
