Novel cyber threats may be determined with intelligence declassification CIA head

The U.S. could expose future cybersecurity threats by conducting intelligence declassification similar to actions done prior to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, according to The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Very deliberate exposure of threat intelligence by the Biden administration has benefited the U.S. during the past six months, said CIA Director William Burns at the Billington Cybersecurity Summit. "It would make it the exception, not the rule. Because the surest way Ive certainly found in a year-and-a-half now as director of the CIA to lose access to that intelligence is to be reckless about how you handle it," Burns added. However, utilizing a different playbook will be needed in combating upcoming threats, Burns warned. "You're going to have to be careful in other instances, whether its in terms of cyber threats or other kinds of challenges, that the United States and our allies will face in the future If used carefully and selectively I think this technique, this tool, of declassifying some of our secrets in a way that serves a broader strategy can pay big dividends," he added.
