North Korea-linked hackers sanctioned by Australia

Australia has issued sanctions, in coordination with the U.S., against one individual and four entities suspected to be part of activities that generate illicit revenue for Pyongyang's weapons development program, reports SecurityWeek.

The measures are targeting North Korea-linked groups that are involved in espionage, cryptocurrency theft, fraudulent IT worker schemes, and other cybercriminal activities. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the joint action is meant to counter North Korea's ongoing threats to regional stability.

The penalties include financial restrictions and travel bans on those believed to be tied to operations that have siphoned large sums from global cryptocurrency platforms. Analysts recently estimated that North Korean hacking groups stole over $2 billion in digital assets during the first three quarters of 2025.

Wong added that Australia will continue collaboration with international partners to push back against hostile cyber campaigns and to promote responsible conduct in cyberspace.

The announcement follows new U.S. sanctions on bankers, institutions, and North Korean nationals accused of helping launder cybercrime proceeds through networks in Russia, China, and elsewhere.
