Public and private organizations in New York state were hit by more than 900 data breaches last year that exposed the personal and financial records of 7.3 million residents, a report released by the State Attorney General Eric J. Schneiderman revealed.

The report, which covers security incidents over an eight-year period at organizations of all sizes and types, said in 2013, the cost of the breaches added up to more than $1.37 billion, based on a Ponemon Institute research that says a breach costs $188 per person affected.

Hackers accounted for 40 percent of the breaches, according to the report, which also attributed the large number of persons whose data was compromised to the Target and LivingSocial breaches.

Noting in a statement that many breaches were avoidable, Schneiderman mused “…one can only imagine how many have been compromised across the nation.”
