Most cyberattacks targeted at consumers

VentureBeat reports that consumers were the leading target of cybercriminals during the last quarter of 2021, experiencing a 73% increase in cyber incidents over the third quarter, followed by the healthcare industry. Most advanced persistent threats were targeted at the transportation and shipping sectors, accounting for 27% of all APT detections, followed by healthcare, according to a Trellix report. Manufacturing had 100% more threats between the third and fourth quarters of last year, while information technology experienced a 36% increase in threats during the same period. Meanwhile, Nobelium, or APT29, was the most active threat actor targeting Ukraine. The report also revealed that existing software and device controls have been continuously used in conducting attacks, with Windows Command Shell and Remote Services being the most used NativeOS Binary and Administrative Tool, respectively. "Our world has fundamentally changed. The fourth quarter signaled the shift out of a two-year pandemic which cybercriminals used for profit and saw the Log4Shell vulnerability impact hundreds of millions of devices, only to continue cyber momentum in the new year where weve seen an escalation of international cyber activity," said Trellix Threat Labs Lead Scientist and Principal Engineer Christiaan Beek.
