The Slovenian man charged with being the mastermind behind the massive Mariposa botnet will serve close to five years in prison.

Matjaz Skorjanc, a 27-year-old former medical student also known online as Iserdo, was arrested in 2010 following a collaborative investigation between police in Slovenia, the FBI, and Spanish law enforcement.

In addition to his 58-month prison sentence, Skorjanc was given a $4,100 fine in relation to his charges that included money laundering.

First discovered in Dec. 2008, the Mariposa botnet is believed to have infected 13 million computers in over 190 countries, including more than half of the Fortune 1,000 companies and close to 40 major banks.

According to an analysis, the botnet would steal account information for social media sites, online email services, as well as banking credentials and credit card data.
