Oops, Chase did it again. Or did they? In a refrain that's becoming more commonplace, JPMorgan Chase may have joined the ranks of companies that have been hit by two data breaches, or more, in fairly short order.
Chase has said publicly that a second breach did not occur.
But the New York Times Dealbook quoted unnamed executives as saying the second breach — which came three months after Chase first reported incursions into its computer network — was orchestrated by hackers linked to Italy or southern Europe who penetrated some servers at the bank. The first attack is now believed to spread well beyond the one million customer accounts estimated to be affected.
The article speculated that instead of being a separate, discreet incident, the second event could instead be fallout from the first breach.
UPDATE: The months-long breach has compromised the accounts of 76 million households as well as those of seven million small businesses.
