The U.S. Department of Justice yesterday announced thatNikhil Nilesh Shah, 33, of Union, N.J., was sentenced to 30 months in prison forsending malicious code to the software company that formerly employed him as aninformation technology manager.Shah had previously admitted to cyberattacking mobileapplication platform developer Smart Online Inc. in June 2012, shortly afterleaving the Durham, N.C.-based company for a new job opportunity. According tothe DOJ, the malicious code he sent to Smart Online's servers deleted much of the company's intellectualproperty and caused at least $5,000 in damages.Shah pleaded guilty to one count of causing the transmissionof computer code. U.S. District Judge Louise Flanagan of the Eastern Districtof North Carolina also ordered Shah to pay $324,462 in restitution.
