Ahead of a critical parliamentary debate on the UK's mandatory national digital identity scheme, Chief Secretary Darren Jones is convening a pivotal meeting with industry providers who are expressing significant opposition to the government's costly plan, Biometric Update reports.
Industry groups, including the Association of Digital Verification Professionals, are uniting to present a united front against the proposed system, arguing it is prohibitively expensive and risks undermining public trust and innovation.
Leaked budget estimates from the Office for Budget Responsibility place the total cost at approximately £1.8 billion, while industry analysis suggests it could reach £2 billion when accounting for the inclusion of vulnerable populations.
David Crack, Chair of the ADVP, stated that with "good will, everyone can win," indicating a desire for collaboration despite their criticisms. Providers are expected to challenge the government on the plan's lack of public and cross-party political support, its potential to sideline existing market participants certified under the current Digital ID Trust Framework, and delays in promised use cases like digital age verification for alcohol purchases. The meeting represents a crucial opportunity for dialogue before MPs debate the legislation the following week.
