Hackers claim breach of Venice flood system

Plain code with the word "cyberattack" in red.

Hackers have reportedly breached Venice's San Marco flood defense system, claiming to have gained control of pumps and the ability to disable defenses and flood coastal areas. This incident highlights the growing vulnerability of operational technology (OT) systems that govern physical infrastructure, with further coverage provided by Security Affairs.

The cyberattack targeted the hydraulic pump system protecting Piazza San Marco. Threat actors, identifying as "Infrastructure Destruction Squad" or "Dark Engine," claimed administrative access, stating they could disable defenses and flood coastal areas. The alleged breach, which began in late March, involved gaining control of the system's interface. Hackers released evidence, including screenshots, and offered full root access for $600, aiming to expose critical infrastructure weaknesses and exert political pressure.

While authorities confirmed that systems directly protecting the Basilica di San Marco were unaffected, the incident demonstrated the potential for manipulation of strategically important infrastructure.
