Former Sygnia Consulting incident response supervisor Ryan Clifford Goldberg and former DigitalMint ransomware negotiator Kevin Tyler Martin entered a guilty plea for their involvement in ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware intrusions against U.S. firms, which was conducted alongside a third unnamed co-conspirator, according to Cyber Security News.
Insider knowledge in the cybersecurity sector was tapped by Goldberg and Martin to perform ALPHV/BlackCat data extortion intrusions, successfully obtaining over $1 million worth of cryptocurrency from a targeted Florida-based medical device firm, court filings revealed. Both Goldberg and Martin were immediately sacked by their respective employers upon the discovery of their illicit activities.
"They acted wholly outside the scope of their employment and without any authorization, knowledge, or involvement from the company," said a DigitalMint spokesperson, who emphasized the company's ongoing cooperation with the Justice Department in investigating their former employee.
