GitHub user publishes unverified Stuxnet reconstruction

Tech Radar reports that a pseudonymous GitHub user has published what they claim is a reconstruction of the Stuxnet malware, a sophisticated computer worm notorious for its role in sabotaging Iran's nuclear program.

The user, operating under the name Sadpainy, released code intended to replicate Stuxnet, the malware that reportedly destroyed a fifth of Iran's uranium enrichment centrifuges. The original Stuxnet source code has never been publicly released, and the name "Stuxnet" itself was coined by Symantec weeks after the malware's discovery in 2010.

The newly published code is derived from publicly available decompiled binaries and has not been verified or tested. Some cybersecurity experts suggest the code may be AI-generated, mimicking the behavior of the original malware based on existing documentation. The repository states the code is for educational purposes and designed to run on older Windows operating systems.
