The Georgia Department of Education has named Levette Williams as chief privacy officer (CPO), according to a release from the department.
Williams, who is currently the agency's technology management director, has had oversight of collecting and reporting K-12 data for the past 15 years since she joined the department.
The release said she would be charged with protecting student privacy as classrooms began to implement more technology and embrace social media more fully. Williams began her career in data reporting in a Florida school district.
“As innovations in classroom technology continue, even greater attention to the protection of student data is necessary,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said in the release, applauding Williams' background in data security. “I know [Williams] will do an excellent job working with K-12 stakeholders to ensure that we have policies and procedures in place to protect our students' privacy.”
