Gentlemen ransomware compromises Romanian energy producer

Ransomware

Romania's Complexul Energetic Oltenia, which is the country's largest coal-based energy producer, had its IT infrastructure disrupted in a Dec. 26 ransomware attack claimed by the Gentlemen ransomware operation, reports BleepingComputer.

Multiple computer applications, including its ERP systems, email service, document management tools, and website, have been taken down as a result of the intrusion, which also encrypted certain files, according to the firm, which supplies almost 30% of Romania's electricity from the four power plants it operates.

"The company's activity was partially affected, without jeopardizing the operation of the National Energy System. Complexul Energetic Oltenia is cooperating with the competent authorities and making every effort to fully restore its IT systems as quickly as possible," said officials.

Gentlemen ransomware, which has already taken responsibility for attacking nearly 50 organizations since its emergence in August, has yet to add Complexul Energetic Oltenia, indicating ongoing negotiations.

Such a development comes a week after Romanian water authority Administraia Naional Apele Romne was reported to have been impacted by a ransomware attack.
