Genesis Market takedown represents focus on disruption over prosecution

The U.S. government's takedown of the Genesis Market as part of last month's 'Operation Cookie Monster' has been touted by U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco to represent law enforcement's shift on prioritizing disruptions of threat operations over the prosecution of threat actors, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. "We are really focused on doing disruptions and not always just looking for the prosecution. The Genesis disruption is a really good example of that. We changed our orientation to say we need to focus on taking action that can prevent the next victim. And to do that, we've paired our prosecutors with cyber agents," said Monaco in an interview with Click Here during the RSA 2023 Conference. Dismantling threat operations have been more crucial than ever amid the growing collaboration between nation-state actors, Monaco noted. "We need to get on our front foot and take those steps that can help prevent the next victim, put those victims at the center of our strategy, tell the private sector we need them to come forward and work with us so that they can prevent the next victim," she added.
