Federal officials notified more than 3,000 U.S. companies in 2013 that their computer networks were compromised, according to a report by the Washington Post.
The organizations alerted by government authorities were both large and small and were part of industries such as retail, finance and even defense contractors. The FBI made close to 2,000 of the advisories to companies in person or via phone, according to the report.
This is reportedly the first time the government has shared any insight into how often it has communicated with the private sector regarding cyber attacks.
As cyber crime continues to ramp up, a recent join study from IDC and the National University of Singapore predicted that enterprises will spend close to $500 billion on efforts in battling malware and preventing data breaches.
