Federal investigators have recommended charges be filed against at least one employee with the St. Louis Cardinals who may have gained unauthorized access into the Houston Astros's database, CNN reported Friday.
Authorities believe the alleged breach was in retaliation after Jeff Luhnow was accused of taking proprietary information when he left the Cardinals to become Astros General Manager.
It's unclear who in the Cardinals organization may face charges but officials said the FBI's Houston office has concluded their investigation and are awaiting word from the U.S. Attorney's office, according to CNN. Investigators are exploring whether senior management was aware of the crime.
The Cardinals fired scouting director Chris Correa, who was among the employees under investigation. His attorney said Correa denied wrongdoing and suggested the investigation should focus on information allegedly stolen by former Cards employees, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
