Federal cyber defense prioritization sought by lawmakers, experts

The U.S. has been urged by lawmakers and cybersecurity experts to fortify its cybersecurity defenses before expanding cyber offensive operations against foreign threats during a House Homeland Security subcommittee hearing, according to CyberScoop.

"We ought to be cautious about pursuing an approach involving the use of offensive cyber tools that could result in relation or escalation if we're not in a position to help defend U.S. networks," said the subcommittee's top Democrat Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, who raised concerns regarding the lack of congressional probe on the significant staffing cutbacks at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. While subcommittee chair Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., highlighted the role of the private sector in strengthening the U.S.'s offensive operations, CISA was noted by CrowdStrike Chief Private Officer Drew Bagley to be pivotal in coordinating public and private offensive efforts.

"This committee can ensure that CISA is properly focused and resourced to perform this mission. From an oversight perspective, you can ensure it has authorities, talent, and capabilities to maximize its impact," said Bagley in written remarks to the subcommittee.
