Examining Google’s red team

ZDNET reports that Google's cybersecurity red team has been working on simulating threats against the company's infrastructure to bolster platform and user safety. Aside from leveraging several techniques used by real threat actors, Google's red team has also gotten creative in threat simulation, with one instance involving the use of USB plasma globes for testing Google Glass security. "It would probably be very bold to say that we can a hundred percent emulate the way that a crime threat actor acts, but with the reports that we have from TAG [Google's Threat Analysis Group] and with the experience we have across a diverse team, we can get together and figure out what would an attacker do with a certain intent and motivation, and then model our actions after that," said Google Red Team Tech Lead and Manager Stefan Friedli. While such simulations have provided Google's red teamers more insights on averting particular cyber threats, Friedli emphasized the importance of adhering to ethical standards so as not to compromise users and staff.
